Weligodage Saman Rathnapriya's name has been gazetted by the National Election Commission as a Member of Parliament.
He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of UNP National List MP Dr Jayampathy Wickramaratne.
He is due to take oaths as an MP when Parliament convenes on February 5.
Mr Rathnapriya is a prominent trade unionist and social activist.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
