Radio-frequency identification (RFID) devices would be installed from April onwards to collect expressway tolls from vehicles which use the Southern Expressway, Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman Nihal Sooriarachchi said.
A special sticker that is configured to a credit account will be issued to drivers who will have to recharge their accounts with cash. RFID device sensors would detect the sticker and deduct the toll from the cash available in the account.
However, these stickers would only be attached to new vehicles, Mr. Sooriarachchi said adding that owners of old vehicles must obtain the stickers from the Motor Traffic Department.
In the event of a cashless account, drivers will be allowed to travel through the highway only once, the RDA Chairman said. The liable charge would then be deducted when the account is topped the next time.
