Two hundred and seventy eight kilograms of heroin, the largest heroin haul in the country so far, was seized by the Police Narcotics Bureau during a raid in Kawdana, Dehiwela.
Initially, nine kilograms of heroin was nabbed during a raid at a residence in Templers Mawatha following a tip-off received by PNB officials, in which two Bangaldesh nationals were residing.
Police then arrested the two suspects and discovered the key of another residence along with the remote control of an automatic gate system.
Details of another residence of Kawdana, Dehiwela came to light following an interrogation carried out on both suspects.
PNB officials then discovered 269 kilograms of heroin and five kilograms of cocaine concealed in cake boxes and other items. Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said, the haul was valued at Rs 3000 million, while adding that it was the largest drug bust in the country so far.
The previous largest haul was in 2013 when PNB officials nabbed 261 kilograms of heroin that was found to be concealed inside tin cans at the Customs Container Terminal in Orugodawatte.
