Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa has challenged rival candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for a live television debate in the run-up to the upcoming presidential poll.
"A strong candidate need not be afraid to engage with their opponent in an unscripted exchange of ideas," Premadasa, the New Democratic Front (NDF) candidate said.
He called on Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Rajapaksa, to take part in the debate, which he said would allow voters to watch both candidates "fearlessly pit" their "policies and visions against each other".
However, Rajapaksa, in his first news conference, after being accepted as a presidential candidate eyed debates between presidential candidates as a "meaningless" activity.
“What we need is to work rather than debating with each other," he said responding to a query at the news briefing.
I challenge @GotabayaR to face me 1:1 on live TV so voters can watch us fearlessly pit our policies and visions against each other. A strong candidate need not be afraid to engage with their opponent in an unscripted exchange of ideas. SP #PresPoll2019
