Salawa explosion: Army to appoint Court of Inquiry

Army Commander Lieutenant General Chrishantha De Silva is due to appoint a Court of Inquiry shortly to ascertain the causes that led to the explosion of the ammunition dump at the Salawa army camp in Kosgama, Avissawella. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) stated that the Court of Inquiry will be appointed on the directions of the National Security Council.

A parallel investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already commenced.

Meanwhile, the MOD has further requested members of the public to immediately inform the army if they came across shrapnel or remnents of munitions in the affected areas. Members of the public are advised strictly not to tamper with such munitions as they are extremely dangerous.

The MOD has further appealed to the public to not be misled by various rumors being spread by "interested parties" in relation to this incident.
