Serving constable nabbed at illegal betting center

A serving police constable was among several suspects arrested when police stormed an illegal betting center in Madipola, Galewela. 

Police said the constable was taken into custody along with his police motorbike. After being arrested, the suspect constable had been admitted to the Dambullla hospital after allegeding that he was assaulted by the OIC of the Galewela police at the illegal betting center. 

However, Galewela Police OIC Inspector Jayantha Withanachchi stated that police had raided the site based on a tip-off and an individual in civilian clothing had there told the officers that he was a policeman and he had come there to meet someone else. Officers had arrested him along with the others. 

Dambulla ASP Gamini Meegahakumbura said he too visited the Galewela police staion after learning of the incident and that only a statement was recorded from the suspect police constable. It was only after being produced in court that the constable had claimed he was assaulted, he stressed. 

He said information will be provided to Police Headquarters for them to initiate an internal inquiry against the suspect officer.
