Another seven suspects alleged to have circulated false information over social media regarding the COVID-19 outbreak have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Police Media Unit said the suspects were arrested between April 10 and 12. Two suspects were arrested on April 10 at Beligala and Katugastota. They were produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court on April 11, where one suspect was ordered to be remanded in custody till April 22.
Four other suspects were arrested on April 11 from Welimada, Kadawatha and Ragama. Another individual was taken into CID custody from Nochchiyagama on April 12. The four suspects arrested on April 11 were produced before the Colombo Magistrate on April 12 and two suspects were ordered remanded in custody till April 16. The suspect arrested from Nochchiyagama is due to be produced before courts today (13).
The latest arrests take the number of those arrested for posting false content on social media to 16. Police emphasized that the CID continues its investigations to track down and arrest persons posting or sharing false information on social media.
