Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando has urged for the expansion and development of the Kankesanturai Harbour.
Accordingly, a consultancy firm has been chosen to provide advice regarding the mechanisms and the plan to develop the harbour, the Ports and Shipping Ministry said.
Minister Fernando had instructed SLPA officials to take steps to construct a new terminal in the harbour with a depth of seven metres to attract larger shipping vessels.
At present, the capacity of vessels visiting the harbour ranges between 300 to 400 tonnes, the ministry added.
Instructions had also been issued to refurbish the existing terminals, construct a new pier, and to expand the breakwater in the harbour.
The developments will take place in two phases on lands spanning 15 acres and 35 acres respectively.
