A Singaporean couple who attempted to smuggle jewellery worth Rs 26 million into Sri Lanka were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday (Jun 28).
The suspects are owners of a leading foreign exchange company, Customs Spokesman Lal Weerakoon told media.
Preliminary investigations have shown that the suspects aged 45 and 55 had made six trips to Sri Lanka this year alone.
They had concealed the stock of jewellery weighing 4.8 kilograms inside their clothes at the time of the arrest. Most of the seized jewellery were necklaces and pendants.
Customs officials had been tipped-off regarding the suspects prior to their arrival in the country yesterday.
