The Sri Lanka Medical Association in a letter to Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne has requested that the latter establish a transparent tobacco taxation formula which it claimed would increase government revenue from tobacco products while decreasing consumption.
The letter addressed by the President of the SLMA, Dr Anula Wijesundere further added that many tobacco companies are involved in smuggling and alleges the British American Tobacco Company (BATC) owner of the Ceylon Tobacco Company of being involved in such activites as well.
Further, the letter alleged that the BATC was "actively involved in smuggling of cigerettes in several continents." In addition it also alleged that the company had come to a "settlement with the European Union in smuggling related issues agreeing to pay around USD 200 million in installments."
