Special traffic arrangements for Indian Premier Modi's visit to Sri Lanka

The Police Department has released a special traffic schedule which would come into effect during Indian Premier Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka on June 09.

The traffic arrangements along with the respective timings on June 09, as released by the Police, are as follows;

Roads which will be closed from 11 am - 12 noon

  • Katunayake - Colombo Expressway
  • Peliyagoda flyover, Orugodawatte junction, Dematagoda junction, Baseline Road from Borella junction to the Borella Cemetry
  • D.S. Senanayake Mawathe until Horton Place, Nelum Pokuna roundabout, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Public Library Rounabout, Dharmapala Mawatha (Pittala Junction), Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Kumaran Ratnam Road, Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Sir Baron Jayatilaka Mawatha, Reclamation Road, Lotus Road, Banku Mawathe, Janadhipathi Mawatha, Galle Road (from Galle Face roundabout until Old Parliament)

Roads which will be closed from 1:45 pm - 3 pm

  • Janadhipathi Mawatha
  • York Street
  • Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha
  • Kumaran Ratnam Road
  • Sir James Pieris Mawatha
  • Flower Road
  • Thurstan Road (until Thummulla)

Roads which will be closed from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

  • Dharmapala Mawatha
  • Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha
  • Nelum Pokuna roundabout
  • Horton Place
  • D.S. Senanayake Mawathe 
  • Baseline Road through Dematagoda and Orugodawatta until the Highway Road.
  • Katunayake -  Colombo Expressway

The Police also released a list of alternative routes which could be used by the public:

  • Vehicles travelling from Galle Road can reach Kandy Road through the Cemetry Roundabout at Thummulla Junction and then across Parliament Road - Battaramulla - Kaduwela - Biyagama.
  • Vehicles travelling from Galle / Matara areas can reach Kadawatha through the Southern Expressway.
  • Vehicles travelling from Colombo (Central) to Colombo (North) could reach the airport or Kandy Road by travelling through Victoria Bridge or Kadirana Bridge.

The Police also advised flight passengers to depart towards the airport at the earliest owing to these traffic arrangements.
