Sri Lanka’s first ever electric passenger train to be constructed in Kandy.

The government is planning to implement an electrified railway system in the Kandy city to ease the prevailing traffic congestion, Power, Energy and Commuter Transport Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera  said today(26).

The decision was taken following a discussion held with the officials at the Transport Ministry regarding the implementation of the project.

 

The construction will commence  from Rambukkana to Kadungannawa and then Kadugannawa to Kandy along Katugastota modernising it as a dual line.

 

The minister stated to extend the line from Kadugannawa to Gampola until Nawalapitiya and also covering the area of Kundasale.

 

Mean while the government is planning to build a one and half kilometer tunnel in the Kandy city connecting Goods shed bus stand and Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic with the railway line. The project is  expected to be built on concrete pillars adjoining the line.

 

Spanish company sought to expedite construction work.

 

State Minister Dilum Amunugama ,Parliament Minister Sarath Amunugama and the representatives from the construction company participated in the Project Initiation discussion held at the Ministry.
