President Maithripala Sirisena has said that a new project titled 'Sujatha Daruwo' would commence from March 15 in a bid to protect school students and the younger generation from narcotics.
"There is an organised racket in the country to smuggle dangerous drugs and introduce them to university and school children through various means" Mr. Sirisena claimed adding that the upcoming project would teach students on the methods of combatting it.
The President further said that according to the latest statistics the number of people who consumed dangerous drugs is nearly 200,000.
He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency's new building at the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium yesterday (Feb 28).
The Unit which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 190 million is set to include five storeys. Separate blocks have been established at the Unit to investigate into the use of stimulant drugs.
