A suspect who allegedly attempted to assault a Police Inspector inside the Wariyapola Police station has been arrested.
Police Media Unit stated that the suspect had come to the police station with an alleged illicit liquor dealer.
The incident had come about after the Inspector complained to the OIC of the Wariyapola Police on April 19 that an illicit liquor dealer from the area had threatened him over the phone.
The OIC had then called the alleged illicit liquor dealer to the police station and warned him sternly over the matter. However, another individual who accompanied the liquor dealer had then allegedly threatened the Inspector inside the police station. The incident had escalated with the suspect violently showing the Inspector, causing him to hit his head on a wall. The Inspector had immediately disabled the suspect and placed him under arrest.
The Inspector is currently receiving treatment at the Nikaweratiya hospital while the arrested suspect has been admitted to the Kurunegala hospital to ascertain whether he was under the influence of liquor. The suspect was inspected by the Kurunegala Magistrate today (21).
Based on information provided to court by the Wariyapola police today, the suspect was remanded till April 29.
