President Maithripala Sirisena has said that the project to distribute tabs among school students has only been approved as a pilot project to be implemented across national schools.
Issuing a press release, the Presidential Secretariat said Mr. Sirisena had made certain recommendations concerning the project when it was first put forward before cabinet in 2017.
The President had proposed to ensure that students are granted access only to educational websites while also suggesting that the project must be implemented as a pilot project before expanding it countrywide.
According to the press release, Mr. Sirisena had suggested that of the Rs 5 million which had been allocated for the project, the required funds could be used to implement the trial of the tab project while the remainder could be used to upgrade schools which lacked facilities.
The President's remarks come almost a week after Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had hailed the approval of the project as a 'remarkable achievement' in the education sector.
