In a bid to promote a culture of transparency five Parliamentarians representing various political groups released details of their Asset declarations to the public today (Feb 28).
The disclosure of documents pertaining to the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities took place at a media gathering organised by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL). Further TISL noted that this marked the first time that a group of MPs from multiple political parties have come together to make this information public.
The five MPs include Tharaka Balasuriya, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, M.A. Sumandiran, Vidura Wickramanayake, and State Minister Eran Wickremaratne.
"We commend the bold step taken by the five members of Parliament to submit their assst declarations to the public" Executive Director of Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) Asoka Obeysekara said.
He added that this step would hopefully encourage other public representatives to follow suit as well.
"This will help open Parliament to the people and promote a culture of transparency and accountability" Mr. Obeysekera said.
He signed off by noting that it has been the TISL's long-standing position that delivering more information to the people is the key factor to enhance governance in the country.
