Three dead, over 200 hospitalized in mass food poisoning

Two women and a man have been confirmed dead and over 200 have been hospitalized following a suspected case of mass food poisoning in Damana, Ampara. 

Police Media Unit said all the victims had consumed food made available during a festival held at the Wanegamuwa Mosque at the 10th Colony in Damana. 

Police said 203 persons who took ill after consuming the food were admitted to the Eragama Hospital and 120 of them have so far been discharged. Two persons were transferred to the Ampara Hospital for further treatment, while two males and 10 females were also transferred to Samanthurai Hospital. However, a male and a female being treated at the Ampara Hospital and one female at the Samanthurai Hospital had died.

All the deceased have been identified as residents of Eragama, aged 53, 45 and 63 years.

According to figures provided by police, following are numbers of those still being treated in hospital: Eragama Hospital - 18 females and 7 males; Akkaraipattu Base Hospital - 8 females, 4 males and 18 children; Ampara Road Hospital, Akkaraipattu - 3 males, 12 females and 3 children; Oluvil Hospital - 4 males, 9 females and 1 child; Attalachchanai Hospital - 1 male, 3 females and 4 children.

Damana Police are conducting further investigations.
