A survey will be carried out under the supervision of Minister Arjuna Ranatunga to determine the area of lands belonging to the Sri Lanka Railway Department (SLR) that have been encroached, Transport Ministry officials said.
More than 14,000 hectares of land in several parts of the country are owned by SLR out of which 5000 hectares of land are of a higher economical value.
However, it is estimated that atleast 10 percent of the lands have been encroached by the people and are being utilised for various purposes.
Due to this reason, Transport Ministry officials said the government is unable to generate revenue using these lands. Accordingly, legal action will be filed against those who have encroached these lands following the completion of the survey.
