Twenty suspects have been taken into police custody in connection with the discovery of firearms and ammunition within the Mount Lavinia Court premises.
Court proceedings were briefly halted yesterday when a Chinese-made pistol and a revolver together with 10 rounds of live ammunition were found hidden in a parcel inside the court.
Police say both firearms had been fully loaded and ready for use when they were discovered.
An underworld leader known as 'Reha' had been brought to the court yesterday under guard for a hearing into a case against him when the incident occurred. Investigators are trying to ascertain if the weapons had been smuggled into the court premises with the aim of targetting him.
