Two persons have been injured in separate shooting incidents, including a shootout between forest rangers and an illegal gem miner at the Yala forest reserve yesterday (Jul 25).
According to the police, the illegal miner had been injured when forest rangers attempted to arrest him in Block 3 of the Yala forest reserve. Some mining tools had been recovered along with three mobile phones from the scene of the incident.
The injured suspect has been identified as a 23-year old resident of Kataragama.
Meanwhile, a group of unidentified persons in a van had opened fire at a motorcyclist in the vicinity of the Epaladeniya roundabout in Kuliyapitiya at around 8:10 pm yesterday.
Police said the injured victim had been admitted to the Kuliyapitiya hospital. The victim has been identified as Saman Chandana alias 'Belek Saman', a 31-year old resident of Gomugamuwa.
A special operation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects who carried out the shooting.
