Two persons have been taken into custody by Omanthai Police today over setting fire on two vehicles last night following an accident that took five lives and leaving 25 persons injured, police said. The death toll in the accident in Omanthai has increased to five overnight, hospital sources said.
A businessman from Wellawatta and his family members are among those killed. The Prado Jeep driver was the other person killed. At least 20 passengers in the bus which collided with the van were injured. The bus was completely damaged in a fire that following the accident.
Somasundaram Luxana (29), daughter of the deceased businessman is currently being treated at the Vavuniya District hospital.
The victims were identified as Ramalingam Somasundaram (83), Aarumugam Thevarajah (62), Thevarajah Sugandhini (51), Thevarajah Sutharshan (30),and the driver Vijayakumar Roshanthan (24).
