Two police officers have been arrested for abetting an illegal excavation operation at a archaelogical site in Kaldamulla, today (Mar 19).
On March 17, five suspects were taken into custody by the Police Organised Crimes Preventive Division in connection with the digging.
However, investigations had revealed that the two police officers had also assisted the illegal operation.
Accordingly, the OIC of the Ichankulam Police Division Inspector S.K. Ariywangsa, 46, and Constable V.N. Vithana, 51 were taken into custody by the Vavuniya police.
The suspects are due to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrates Court today.
