The UK government has pledged its support towards a power generation project using waste material, the Ministry of Power and Energy said in a press release.
This move is a part of the power sector's efforts to establish an adequate, low-cost, and enviornmental power friendly system in order to meet the rising electricity demands of the country on a daily basis, the release said.
Talks were held between Minister Ravi Karunanayake and UK's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka James Dauris on the establishment of this mechanism earlier this week.
During the discussion, the Power and Energy Minister had stressed that Sri Lanka is currently considering using alternative energy sources in order to meet the high electricity demand.
He had also observed that water bodies which are capable of generating power at a low cost are being utilised in the country at present.
Commenting on the proposed power generating mechanism, Mr. Karunanayake had insisted that it would serve as a feasible solution to both the power crisis as well as waste management issues in the country.
Further, he had said that he would hold talks with relevant officials in the power sector in order to proceed with the implementation of this project.
