The working committee of the United National Party (UNP) has yet to reach agreement on the proposed constitution of the 'Democratic National Front' alliance, Minister Ajith Perera said today (Aug 1).
Speaking to reporters after the working committee meeting, Mr. Mannaperuma pointed out that there were several errors in the constitution for the UNP-led alliance.
UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had asked the committee members to submit their opinions to amend the constitution of the alliance in writing, Mannapperuma said.
Accordingly, he added that a majority of the working committee was not in agreement to form the alliance on August 5 as planned. "Only 12 individuals held that the launch should take place on August 5," he said.
The working committee had also stressed that the post of general secretary of the alliance must be from the UNP. Minister Sajith Premadasa had expressed willingness to serve as the general secretary, Mr Mannaperuma noted.
Meanwhile, Minister Harsha de Silva had posted a picture of the proposed constitution on his Twitter handle highlighting its mistakes.
The constitution had referred to a venue in Havelock road for the secretariat of the UNP-led alliance whereas the central committee had stated that the secretariat must be located at the UNP headquarters in Sirikotha.
