The US Embassy in Colombo has issued a secuirty alert from May 1 to 7 in view of scheldued May Day rallies by the political parties around the country.
The U.S. Embassy said it expect that various groups and political parties will hold parades and rallies in conjunction with the annual Labor Day holiday. "Known locations include, but are not limited to, Colombo, Jaffna, Galle, and Batticaloa. We expect these gatherings to be peaceful but people should anticipate road closures and disruptions to traffic throughout this period,"
The Embassy also reminded its citizens that even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. "You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations,"
