Amendments to tax laws to pave the way for the implementation of VAT will be approved by Sri Lanka’s parliament by end July, Prime Minister Rani Wickremesinghe said.
Responding to a Supreme Court ruling on Monday staying VAT and NBT until the necessary laws are passed in parliament, the PM said in a statement that VAT will still be effective from May 2.
“This interim order is not expected to have any adverse impact on the government’s revenue collection,” he said, adding that the VAT Amendment Bill was presented to parliament for the first reading on July 8 and the second reading is due on July 23.
“The unity government, which has a clear majority, expects the legislative process to be completed before the end of the month of July. Thereafter the revised rates will be applicable with effect from May 2.” - ENDS -
