Fisheries Minister, Douglas Devananda, promised to take steps to allow villagers of the Trincomalee Ichchantivu to utilize 117 acres of land for agricultural purposes.
The Minister engaging a tour in the villages at the Trincomalee district on Tuesday (On October 11) said that he will speak to the Agriculture Minister, Mahinda Amaraweera and propose the provision of land to the villagers as a method of facing the prevailing economic crisis.
He said that from 1969 onward, the people of the Ichchantivu village had utilized 177 acres for agriculture but due to the militaristic situation in the area after 1983, the land was forbidden for utilization.
“I understand that the people of the North and East were faced with many injustices during the war and the Tamil politicians representing these areas are working for their own benefit”, he added.
