A Sub Inspector who obtained a bribe of Rs 5,000 with an assurance that he would not take action against persons who were operating a gambling business was sentenced to a 20 year RI term by Colombo High Court.
The SI also was charged for demanding the bribe to return a mobile phone which had been seized during the raid.
He was sentenced for 10 years each for the two offences and the sentence will run concurrently in 10 years while Rs 5,000 fine was also imposed.
The sentence was passed by High Court Judge Adithya Patabendi after the allegations was proved beyond doubt.
The SI had demanded Rs 10,000 and obtained Rs 5,000 as an initial payment to settle the case which had taken place while the officer was serving in the Ahungalle area seven years back.
The SI also had assured that he would return the mobile phone which had been seized during the raid.
The SI was identified as K.P. Kumara.
