Minister Dinesh Gunawardhana and Thailand Ambassador Mrs Chulamanee Chartsuwan participated in religious activities at Kotahena Deepaduththarama Thai Rajamahavihara this week. The religious observations were conducted by the chief monk of the temple Ven. Shasthrapathi waskaduwe Mahindawansha.
The Deepaduththaramaya, initially built in 1785 was the first buddhist temple in Colombo and was home to Ven. Migettuwatte sri Gunananda Thera,the leader of the famous Panadura Vadaya and a great orator. Deepaduththaramaya is also cherished by thai Buddhist and Thai royalty for the great importance the temple holds in thai history. Prisdang Chumsai, the grandson of king Rama 3 of thailand, attained priesthood under the most Venerable Waskaduwe Subhoothi Thera in 1896 as Ven Jinarawansa Thera.
Since then, generations of many Thai royalty have visited Deepaduththaramaya and bestowed the temple their assistance. Ven. Galagama Dammaransi and Ravinatha Ariyasinghe also participated at this event.
