Iran calls for multilateralism to combat coronavirus

Opinion

Iran has called for the adoption of multilateralism to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and denounced the United States policy of sanctions as ‘economic and medical terrorism’.

In a statement released through its embassy in Colombo, the Islamic Republic said:

As UN Secretary General has rightly pointed out the Corona crisis is the most serious crisis after the Second World War.

The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus named as Covid  - 19 which was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization highlighted the integrity of the world we are living in and showed that international crises require international solutions.

Therefore, fighting the Coronavirus threat requires a novel paradigm in the human thought which necessitates regional and international cooperation regardless of the power related enmities in our integrated world.

The fact, however, is that even powerful countries are not fully capable of dealing with the consequences of the Coronavirus or similar crises.

Unfortunately, despite the constant emphasis of the Islamic Republic of Iran on multilateralism, the unilateralism policy of some countries in recent years has jeopardized the international peace and security more than ever. The Coronavirus pandemic proved that the nature of threats against the peace and security of the human community has changed.

US unilateral withdrawal from JCPOA and adopting economic and medical terrorism policy towards Iranian nation and making groundless accusations against Islamic Republic of Iran about the Coronavirus outbreak fall into this category and are aimed at diverting the international public opinion and shirking responsibility.

Now that the Coronavirus outbreak has turned into a global issue, all the governments and nations need to stand by each other in the fight  against Covid-19 since saving the lives of the people and dealing with this disease requires joint and universal measures and cooperation.
