This is a proposal for the transport of the bountiful harvest of vegetables in the Dambulla region to other places in the island very much in need of them.
For this, the Government should make arrangements to purchase all types of vegetable produce the farmers bring to Dambulla in a controlled and organized manner.
The purchase price of the different vegetables to be decided in advance and arrangements to pay the farmers on deliveries made. The weighing devices are to be provided.
The purchased Vegetables should be loaded on to Lorries and transported to the Matale railway station to be loaded on to railway compartments/goods carriages as per advice by the Railway Authorities& Department of Agriculture..
These trains should leave Matale and travel to Kandy and on to Polgahawela and reach Maradana/Colombo Fort where the produced brought should be unloaded in a systemic manner.
Distribution of the vegetable stocks brought to Maradana/Colombo should be entrusted to Sathosa or the Department of Marketing.
Security to trains transporting Vegetables: to be undertaken by the State Security personnel & Railway Security.
To coordinate the functioning of the above a special committee:comprising Representatives of the Department of Agriculture, Department of Marketing, Railway Authorities and other relevant organizations should be formed. This committee should be headed by a Senior Administrator with powers vested by the Head of State.
