Chamara Kumara, the long jumper and sprinter W.A. Karunathilake were named the most outstanding male and female athletes respectively at the Lanka Lions Athletics Meet held at Diyagama last week. Kumara achieved 7.45metres in the men’s long jump final while Karunathilake clocked 56.6 seconds in the women’s 400metre event. Both represent the Kandy District Athletic Association. Chamal Kumarasiri cleared 15.28m in the boys Under-18 triple jump event to set a new meet record as he was named the best performer in that age group. Nadeeka Lakmali, the national record holder of the women’s javelin throw, comfortably won the women’s javelin throw clearing a distance of 53.90metres to set a new meet record. Puja Divyangani of Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya won the Under-20 best performer’s award after her feat of 12.24 metres in the girls triple jump as she set a new meet record.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
