Retired Major General Palitha Fernando was elected president of Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) at its elections held at the National Library Auditorium on Tuesday (30).
Former AASL president Fernando, was reelected for a term of four years obtaining 70 votes against outgoing president Sugath Thillakaratne, who received 32 votes.
Former secretary G.L.S. Perera, who had his name as the third the third candidate at the AASL election for the post of president, withdrew his nomination at the eleventh hour.
However Perera was elected as one of the seven vice presidents while others were Lal Chandrakumara, H.E. Nimalasiri, Anil Weerasinghe, H.M. Akmal, Nayanthi Kumari Chandrasena and Irangani Rupasinghe.
Former secretary Prema Pinnawela was elected uncontested as secretary while Shantha de Silva was elected uncontested as the treasurer.
H.U. Upali received 65 votes to beat Sampath Jayasinghe, who received 44 votes in the run for the position of assistant treasurer.
