Athletics: Sri Lanka Telecom emerge Mercantile champs for third time

For the third successive time Sri Lanka Telecom emerged champions at the 33rd Mercantile Athletics Championships concluded at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex Diyagama. 

Sri Lanka Telecom collected 420 points while the runners-up MAS Holdings gained 409 points. 

Sri Lanka Telecom bagged the championship title by a majority of 11 points. 

The meet was conducted by the Mercantile Athletic Association and 48 companies in the private sector numbering nearly 2000 athletes took part in the three day event. 

It is notable that all national sportsmen took part in the competition and managed to win their respective events as well. 

An Indian mercantile team too took part in the event and scored 45 points. 

The overall men’s championship was won by Sri Lanka Telecom with 202 points. 

The overall women’s championship went to MAS Holdings. 

Nadeera Viyanage of MAS holdings and W.K.I.U. Priyangika of SriLankan Airlines were adjudged the best male and female athletes respectively. 

Best athlete Nadeera Viyanage cleared the high jump in 1.89 metres while Priyangika clocked 15.1 seconds in the 100 metres hurdles. 

The contest was sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom.
