MDS Fencing Club came out on top when they emerged overall champion of the 5th National Fencing Championship which concluded at the MAS Royal Arena in Reid Avenue.
The champion MDS Fencing Club clinched the title by securing three gold medal, a silver medal and four bronze medals while Slimline Fencing Club was a close second with three gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals with last year’s champion Unichela Fencing taking the third spot.
MDS Fencing Club secured one gold medal in the men’s category in the foil individual event won by Suresh Sudharshana with the other two gold medals came in the women’s category of foil individual won by Rita Prakasha and the mixed team event with the winning members being Ishara Maduranga, Rita Prakasha, Sriyani Rajapakse and Nishani Fernando.
Slimline Fencing Clubs gold medals one in the men’s category of the epee individual event won by Nuwan Priyadharshana and the other two in the women’s category events of the epee individual won by Niranjala Weeraratne and the sabre individual won by Anuruddhika Dulanjali.
The other two gold medals were won by Sadesh Chandana of Unichela fencing in the sabre individual event and by Linea Fencing Club who took the men’s mixed event with the team comprising Priyan Seneviratne, Amila Rumesh, Kasun Pathirana and M. Dayananthan.
Meanwhile Sadesh Chandana of Unichela Fencing Club and Anuruddhika Dhananjali of Slimline Fencing Club were adjudged the best fencers in the men’s and women’s category.
The 5th National Fencing Championship saw the participation of ten clubs in both the men’s and women’s categories which was contested by 103 fencers contesting in four events of foil, epee, sabre and team events.
