The pristine fairways at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) came alive last Sunday (17) as 124 golfers teed off for the much awaited Annual Golf Tournament between Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
The trophies at stake were the prestigious 114th Burdett Trophy, 80th Puffin Cup for the ladies, 125th Anniversary Cup and the Masters Trophy.
The first tournament to conclude was the Masters trophy where the Colombo team captained by Shiran De Soysa made a clean sweep winning all 4 matches.
Soon after, the Nuwara Eliya team captained by Amal Cabraal came back strong to win the 125th tournament with 9 matches to 6.
The Ladies Puffin cup was also won by Nuwara Eliya under Rohina Macan Marker in a hard fought battle by 4.5 matches to 3.5.
As the tournament climaxed towards the celebrated Burdett Trophy, expectations at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club rose as the their team pulled back winning the first singles match after Colombo had taken an early lead in the doubles matches that morning.
However, the experienced Colombo team captained by Primal Wijenayake finished off well to retain the 114th Burdett Trophy and conclude a very successful tournament hosted by Nuwara Eliya Golf Club under its captain Firaz Hameed.
The Awards Ceremony and dinner that evening was well attended and the President of NEGC, Major General Srinath Rajapakse gave away the 114th Burdett Trophy and 80th Puffin Cup to the winning teams.
