Resuming from their overnight total of 5 for 2, Sri Lanka moved on and were badly placed again at 95 for 5 until Chandimal came up with a heroic knock of 162 not out off 169 deliveries, inclusive of 19 fours and four sixes. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed a match bag of ten wickets. India made 375 runs in the first innings to take a healthy lead of 188 runs after restricting Sri Lanka at 183.
