Netball: Hockey Project Officer Tamara Liyanage appointed Youth Netball Coach

Sport

The trial to trim the current 30-member National Youth Netball Pool to 18, will be held on February 12 at the Nawalapitiya Jayatilleke Indoor Stadium, as decided by the Sri Lanka Netball Federation (SLNF).

The Pool's residential fitness training conducted for the past two weeks, will continue until the last week of April, after the pool is reduced to 18.

The delay in Pool training was due to the delay in appointing the Netball coach by the Ministry of Sports.

Now that former National Youth Coach Tamara Liyanage has been appointed as coach, she will continue training the pool for two international competitions.

Ms Liyanage coached the Sri Lanka team to win the Asian Youth Netball Championships in Hong Kong in 2015.

The other teams to qualify were Malaysia (Runner-up) and Singapore (third).

The first international competition is the Asian Youth Netball Championships in South Korea from May 7-14, followed by the World Youth Netball Championships from July 8-16 in Botswana.

There are allegations in certain sections that the delay in naming the Netball coach was due to the presence of 4 Sports Ministry representatives on the interview Board.

They are I.P. Wijeratne (Actg. Deputy Director- Dept. of Sports Development), Y.K. Kularatne (Athletics Project Officer- Dept. Of Sports Development), Dhammika Wanigasinghe (Asst. Director of Sports- Sabaraganuwa Province) and Rupa Gunasekera (Rtd. Sports Officer- Sports Ministry).

Of the 5, Tamara Liyanage is the Hockey Project Officer attached to the Dept of Sports Development, and there had been a certain amount of favoritism in selecting Tamara Liyanage to the post.

The Sports Minister has told his officials that they should not hold posts in Sports Associations, especially that of coaches, which he has indicated on several previous occasions.

However, he himself has broken this rule in appointing Tamara Liyanage as the Netball coach. Due to this, other Netball coaches are overlooked and left in the lurch.
