Bangladesh dominated the opening day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Chittagong, after a partnership of 236 runs between Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim put them in a strong position today (31).
Electing to bat first Bangladesh made a solid start as openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes put up 72 runs before the epic partnership between Mominul and Rahim was scripted.
Sri Lanka used six bowlers, two pacies and four spinners, but could not outsmart the hosts as Mominul carried his bat through the day to remain unbeaten at 175.
He faced 203 deliveries and hit 16 fours and a six while building up a double century stand for the second wicket, the fourth best for Bangladesh for any wicket.
Rahim was caught behind off Suranga Lakmal for 92, after he had faced 192 deliveries and hit 10 boundaries.
Opener Iqbal was the first to be dismissed at 72 and he made 52 off 53 deliveries inclusive of six fours and a six, before falling for spinner Dilruwan Perera.
Kayes was trapped leg-before off spinner Lakshan Sandakan for 40, which came off 75 balls inclusive of four boundaries.
Sri Lankan bowlers were running out of ideas or breakthroughs until Lakmal managed to send back Rahim as Bangladesh's third wicket, and claimed the wickets of Liton Das for a duck in the very next delivery.
Bangladesh 374 for 4 wickets (90) (Tamim Iqbal 52, Imrul Kayes 40, Mominul Haque 175n.o, Mushfiqur Rahim 92, Mahmadullah 9n.o, Suranga Lakmal 2/43, Lakshan Sandakan 1/58, Dilruwan Perera 1/98)
