The opening ceremony of the 2015 World Cup will be a two-part affair, with Melbourne and Christchurch hosting separate functions on the evening of February 12, two days before the start of the tournament, foreign media reports said. The warm-up matches will be on at the time – Bangladesh face Ireland and Scotland take on West Indies on the same day – as current and former World Cup players take part in the celebrations at Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. A report on the Cricket Australia website confirmed that cultural and music performances as well as a fireworks display would be part of the show as well as “a yet-to-be-revealed special moment”. Melbourne, apart from hosting the opening ceremony, will also be the venue for the first match in Australia – Australia v England – as well as the final of the tournament on March 29. The report also said that the Christchurch edition of the ceremony would “feature some of New Zealand’s best known performers, cricket legends including Sir Richard Hadlee and Stephen Fleming, and a special segment to recognise the rebuilding of the city following the disastrous earthquakes [in 2011]”.
