U-19 CWC: Afghanistan stun Sri Lanka by 32 runs

Afghanistan stunned Sri Lanka with a 32-run victory in a Group 'D' match of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup played at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei, New Zealand a short while ago.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl as Afghanistan justified the invite by plundering 284-7 in 50 overs. 

Sri Lanka made a poor start and to add more woes came in a rain interruption, after which the target was revised to 235 in 38 overs.

For Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran top scored with 86 runs off 112 deliveries inclusive of a boundary and five sixes as Ikram Ali Khil and Darwish Rasooli added up half tons. 

Khil made 55 off 89 balls with four boundaries and Rasooli clobbered 63 in 44 balls inclusive of nine fours and a six. 

Nisar Wahdat made 25 off 20 balls with three fours as Azmatullah followed in with a 10-ball 20 which included a six and a four. 

For Sri Lanka Thisaru Rashmika and Nipun Malinga claimed two wickets. 

Sri Lanka were made to defend after losing both openers quickly before Krishan Arachchige and Jehan Daniel put on 76 runs for the third wicket to put their team on track. 

Daniel top scored with 48 off 57 balls with a four and three sixes and Arachchige made 41 in 69 balls with a four and two sixes. 

Ashen Bandara hit 38 off 24 coming down the order and his knock included four boundaries and two sixes while the skipper Kamindu Mendis pinched in with a 27-ball 32 with a couple of fours and a six. 

Santhush Gunathilaka remained unbeaten on 12 when the side was bowled out. 

But wickets fell regularly as Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 202 in 37.3 overs. 

Naveen-ul-Haq picked four wickets while Azmatullah and Qais Ahmad claimed two wickets each.
