Volleyball: 16th DSI Super Sports Schools Tournament from May 7 to June 6

District level matches of the 16th DSI Super Sports Schools Volleyball tournament will be held from May 7 to June 6 islandwide. 

This tournament will be organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation in collaboration with Schools Volleyball Association and the Ministry of Education. 

Initiated in 1999 with the participation of 198 teams and the organisers are expecting teams of over 3000 teams to take part in this year's edition. 

The tournament will be staged in three categories for Under 14 boys and girls, Under 16 boys and girls and Under 18 boys and girls. 

The organisers said that they are not in a position to inform the exact number of participating teams as up to the moment applications are still receiving.for this largest participated volleyball event in Sri Lanka. 

Over 40 girls and boys have represented the national team from the year of initiation. 

Sri Lanka was among the top seven teams at the 2008 Asian Junior Volleyball championship in which experience gained from this tournament had a big hand. 

The national level matches of this tournament will start on June 20 and conclude on June 26 with the final matches of each category scheduled to be held on July 15 and 16 and the venues to be decided later. 

Schools volleyball suffered a setback as DSI Super Sports Schools Volleyball tournament was not held in 2014 and 2015. The tournament was resumed on the request of the schools islandwide. 

The press conference held at the National Olympic Committee auditorium was attended by the President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation W.G.S. Erandika and Thusith Rajapakse, the Managing Director of DSI Group along with top officials. 

The president of the SLVF said that six tournaments of national level is planned to be staged this year and in addition a national level beach tournament is also to be held.
