The Post Office Savings Bank was once a vital part of the Postal Department, and provided customers a means of saving through the network of post offices and sub-post offices across the country. Meanwhile, the National Savings Bank had no connection whatsoever with the Postal Department.
However, the obvious difference between a government department and a bank did not stop the late Dr. N. M. Perera, as Minister of Finance, from merging the Post Office Savings Bank with the National Savings Bank.
The National Savings Bank maintains a separate unit, the “Postal Unit”, to deal with National Savings Bank transactions conducted at post offices and sub-post offices. It is time the authorities separated the Post Office Savings Bank from the National Savings Bank and put it where it belongs, under the purview of the Postal Department.
The National Savings Bank should be left to look after its own affairs.
