Two artists to auction their work

For the first time two contemporary artists Channa Ekanayake and Prageeth Manohansa will auction their work in a move to sell their work as well as create an awareness of the environment, at an exhibition at the kOOii Gallery in Hokandara on March 15.

Art lovers will be invited to bid for their favourite art work on paper, either in person at the gallery or by telephone or e mail. The auction will close at midnight on Saturday March 23.

All the creations at the exhibition will have the same starting price of Rs 15,000. Usually the smallest art work by each artist sells at Rs. 25.000 while larger pieces could go upto Rs. 90, 000 or more.

Channa and Prageeth are both concerned with the impact of environmental destruction and their creations depict this. Channa’s paintings reflect the tranquility of traditional village life, where resources are used rather than abused. Prageeth recycles junk and used car parts, into sculptures.

The idea to hold an auction came from Prageeth. “I was thinking of an original way to connect with art enthusiasts. I like many people to get familiar with my work and an auction brings people together and offers an exciting opportunity to buy work at reduced prices,” he said.
