Aiyathurai Gnanathasan who was appointed Additional Solicitor - General by the Public Service Commission on April 30 last year, will take silk as President's Counsel (PC) tomorrow, March 9.
Mr. Gnanathasan who was born in Chavakachcheri was a product of the Sri Lanka Law College. He was called to the Bar in 1980 and commenced his legal practice in the Chambers of the late A.
Mahendrarajah, President’s Counsel (PC) in 1980 and was attached to the legal firm of "Sivanathan and Associates" in Colombo. He joined the Attorney - General's Department about a year later as a State Counsel.
He was appointed as Senior State Counsel in 1995 and Deputy Solicitor - General on July 14, 1999 and was promoted as Additional Solicitor - General on April 30, 2008.
Mr. Gnanathasan was admitted as a Solicitor of the United Kingdom on July 1, 1992 and was attached to Rajah and Company, one of the leading law firms in England. He was enrolled as a practitioner (Barrister and Solicitor) of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Australia on April 11, 1994 and was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia, on May 2, 1994. He received a Commonwealth Scholarship to do his "Master’s in Laws" in the University of the West Indies which he completed in 1998.
He has been a visiting lecturer in Criminal Law from 1995 to 2007 and Chairman of the Board of Examiners (Preliminary) at the Sri Lanka Law College. He is also a visiting lecturer and examiner of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo since 2003.
His methodical and meticulous preparation, command of the language and knowledge of the law have always won the appreciation of the Bench and the Bar.
Mr. Gnanathasan presented a paper on issues concerning accession, implementation and operation experiences in Sri Lanka at the Asia Pacific Regional Meeting on the work of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, in Sydney, Australia in June 2007.
He is the son of the late V.N. Aiyathurai, Deputy Principal, Driebergs College, Chavakachcheri and the late P. Aiyathurai (retired teacher of Driebergs College).
