Sand mining at Deduru Oya, what next
A government decision to lift restrictions on transport of river sand is being flagrantly abused with many of those involved in the trade mining sand from various locations, rivers and streams. The Deduru Oya which runs through the Kurunegala district is one such location. Our picture shows a sand mountain and heavy machinery at the dried up river. With the increase of sand mining the number of lorries transporting sand — as the inset picture taken in Polonnaruwa shows — has also increased. Pix by Pushpakuara Jayaratna (Kurunegala) and Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa ( Polonnaruwa).

When a tree gets old it begins to wither. Is this happening to Sri Lanka Cricket?
