The Intel Xeon 5500 series, said to be the 'foundation for its next decade of innovation', was recently introduced locally, according to an Intel statement. This series of processors, previously codenamed 'Nehalem-EP', had reportedly been released globally in March 2009.
The company further indicates that this series is the first of ‘17 enterprise-class processors’ to be launched, considering this to be Intel's ‘most revolutionary server processors’ since the Pentium Pro which was launched 15 years ago.
More than 230 individual systems utilizing the 5500 series are also expected from in excess of 70 manufacturers, including Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Sun Microsystems and others, with all featuring the ability to 'automatically adjust for specified energy usage levels’ as well as ‘speed data center transactions and customer database queries'. The company also anticipates that these chips will 'play a key role in scientific discoveries by researchers who use supercomputers'. |
