Mother jumbos ‘imprisoned’ with babies

By Arul, Colombo 13

The agony of the poor baby elephants Sindu and Raju has not ended. Following vehement protests from the public, the authorities ordered that the two mother elephants be sent to Kandy to join their “kidnapped” babies.

But this is not the answer to the problem. Sending the mothers of the estranged baby elephants to be with their babies is like sending the mother of a minor wrongly incarcerated to be with her child in prison.

The proper thing to do is to release the minor from prison and let it rejoin its mother in its original habitat.

These two baby elephants need not only their mothers but also their natural habitat and environment.
