It is rare that one finds a talented jewellery designer who is also an equally talented artist. Imthias Kaleel has been a jewellery designer for the past 15 years and equally proven that he is no amateur with the paint brush. To date he has put together three art exhibitions with a fourth, ‘Impressions Nouvelles 4’’ now on at the Lionel Wendt.
In his latest exhibition, in addition to his abstract portraits, Imthias reveals some of his new jewellery designs along with a collection of Arabic calligraphy (the art of beautiful or artistic handwriting). Talking about his intricately designed jewellery, Imthias explains that most of it is constructed from materials freely available on the market, like wood, shells and sterling silver.
“I use oxidation to give my jewellery a dark and highlighted look,” Imthias adds. He also divulged that he drew inspiration for his work from everyday things like the weather or the skin of an animal.
A large collection of his unique jewellery is exported to foreign countries, especially Germany, where he says there is a steady demand for his creations. Indeed he has spent a considerable amount of time abroad in Belgium and London, honing his design techniques, learning to inject his individuality directly into his work.
Imthias has also launched a new range of jewellery called ‘Jewel Green’ which focuses on nature. This theme manifests itself through pieces of expertly cut and shaped jewellery carefully decorated with natural elements such as dried flowers and leaves.
Most of his paintings, ornaments, cards and jewellery can be viewed or bought at his uniquely decorated shop, Imthias Design, on Hotel Road, Mount Lavinia.
