Global architects urged to come up with innovative solutions

Louise Cox, President, International Union of Architects (UIA) this week called upon all architects to grab the opportunity and come up with innovative solutions with sustainability by design for the benefit of the whole mankind for a much better worl.

She made these comments at the inaugural ceremony of the 27th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects held the Water’s Edge last week. Chandana Edirisuriya, President, SLIA welcoming the guests and the delegates said that the construction industry had a bad period last year due to the global financial crisis and also due to the conflict situation in the country.

They have now come up with an alternative plan to participate in the development activities that are set to take off in the country now. Therefore he urged government organizations to accommodate them in obtaining consultancy services, etc. This year with the Architect 2010 – 28th annual sessions of the SLIA

the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Association of Architects was also held in Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake was the Chief Guest and the keynote address on the theme “Rethinking Sustainability” was made by Gordon Chong, Founder Chong Partners Architecture, USA.
Scrolls were presented to new Members of SLIA. Also the awards for Design, Colour, Research and Publications were presented in recognition of creativity and efforts on the work carried out by the professionals of the local architectural fraternity during the year.

Those who made immense contribution to local architectural industry were conferred with honours.
Lalith Devendra de Siva was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of SLIA; Professor Nimal De Silva was presented a special award in recognition of the services he has rendered in the field of architectural education and Valentine Gunasekera was awarded the honorary membership of SLIA for his contribution towards the field in both professional and educational scopes.

Several important personalities of CAA and UIA and the Architects Regional Council of Asia were also present and among them were Mubasshar Hussein, Chairman ARCASIA and incumbent President, CAA, Prof. Gordon Holden.
